Chocolate. It’s hard to believe someone who says they don’t like it. It’s pretty well known that dark chocolate is often a healthier choice than milk chocolate. Unfortunately even the darkest chocolate bars are highly processed and most of the nutrients + antioxidants we’re told are in chocolate are lost. This leaves you with a lot of excess sugar and fat
To process the chocolate that we can buy in the candy aisle, cacao beans are roasted to form cocoa and combined with sugar and fat. Heating the beans at such a high heat reduces the benefits in the cacao – this is why raw chocolate or straight cacao is truly the best choice for your fix.
Raw chocolate, or cacao, is low in sugar and filled with many important nutrients + vitamins: magnesium, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B9 and vitamin E, protein, fiber, calcium, zinc, iron, copper, potassium and manganese. There are also healthy monounsaturated fats, which are great for your heart.
Raw cacao supports so many essential functions of your body. The many vitamin, minerals and antioxidants work with the cardiovascular system to improve circulation, lower cholesterol and blood pressure and increase blood flow. The fiber present in raw cacao benefits your digestive system and stimulates digestive enzymes. There is also a ton of power going towards your nervous system, with many alkaloids, proteins, and nutrients working together to stimulate the central nervous system and improve mental health. All of this helps to relax your muscles, dilate blood vessels and boost energy. Improved circulation helps bring more serotonin to your brain which gives you that blissed out mood you’re truly craving from chocolate.
This raw dark chocolate + blueberry smoothie bowl is the perfect antidote to a chocolate craving – and you can enjoy it anytime… even breakfast! After my run this morning, chocolate was all that I wanted. Given the cardiovascular benefits and the runners high I was already feeling, this makes a ton of sense. Blended up with blueberries, greens and my favorite superfoods, I’m feeling the chocolate buzz. Blend this sweet, frozen treat up to satisfy your craving morning, noon or night.
