Is it me, or does it feel like February is the month of Chocolate?
We see it more frequently at stores and obviously it is front in center during Valentine’s day. During the deep winter season, bodies tend to crave a little pick-me-up and chocolate can be an effective aphrodisiac. It is no wonder most of us have a love affair with this deep dark treats. There is good reason for it, too. Cacao and cocoa are associated with improving mood and increasing energy and alertness.
Independent research has shown that there cacao has a positive effect on heart health, protecting the cardiovascular system and improving digestion and the gut – which research has shown is directly connected to heart health. Other benefits we can use to bolster our arguments for “just one more piece” include reduced blood pressure, decreased inflammation, and improved cholesterol.
Cacao is one of the world’s most powerful superfoods – revered for centuries by cultures around the world. In Aztec culture, cacao was considered a gift to the gods and was used as a form of currency. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytochecmicals and is actually proven to increase blood flow to the brain. elevates the moon and improves alertness.
What is not to love?
When we’re buying chocolate from the store, it is often the sugar. Artificial sugars are oftentimes the first ingredient in the treats we have come to love. And these provide some not so sweet side effects, such as jitteriness, increased insulin and cortisol, and more. Sugar has been shown to be more addictive than cocaine, which admittedly has to have something to do with the frequent cravings I have for chocolate covered almonds!! Sugar wreaks havoc on almost every system of the body and contributes greatly to belly fat, anxiety, depression, challenges and overall difficulty coping with the stress of life.
But it IS possible to have the chocolate without the artificial sugar… and it may take you less time than a trip to the grocery store (once all of the ingredients are in place).
My favorite ingredient to include in all of my smoothies and sweets are AWAKENING Herbal Elixirs from LOVE HERB GIRL. These Alchemical blends are made by Lori Barron, a revolutionary Chinese Medicine herbalist who combines the ancient power of herbs and crystal for their ability to heal the body. For this recipe I use AWAKEN BEAUTY, which uses renowned beauty herbs known to build and purify the blood, calm the spirit and nourish the skin by increasing production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. This blend balances hormones, detoxifies the liver and blood and nourishes the fluids of the body. Inside each blend is a Rose Quartz, which has been blessed with the intention of unconditional love, joy, healing and compassion. This crystal activates the heart chakra and our connection to universal love.
My work with HERB GIRL products has enhanced my glow and brought about more centeredness and a greater connection to the love I have within.
And it was with a happy, joyful heart that I created this amazing recipe that I excitedly and lovingly share with you this Valentine’s Day.
