I prefer the food I eat to be clean + unprocessed. I also love getting my energy from rich, organic superfoods. But you know what? Sometimes I just realllllllly want a candy bar. It would be silly of me to deny that, especially given I grew up in a home that considers Snickers a food group (not candy bars… Snickers). I know I’m not alone – I work with people who find it difficult to say no to sweet chocolate and the satisfying texture of a candy bar. A lot of people turn to “healthy” snack bars as an alternative, lured by the “it tastes like you’re eating something unhealthy” claim.
I understand the appeal of this thinking; after all, I am in search of the candy bar taste without the sugar, carbs + junk ingredients, too. Except for one thing: I’m on a path that doesn’t include impossible to pronounce ingredients or sneaky science. I’m on the quest for real, whole foods combined to actually give me the taste, texture, convenience and satisfaction I’m seeking. I want a bar that’s energizing, chocolate-y + that tastes like I AM eating something healthy – raw cacao, unprocessed coconut and spices that intrigue my senses.
So when I started chatting with superfood brand Essential Living Foods and they asked me to try + review their Organic Keen-Wah Decadence bars I was intrigued. The first thing I liked about this bar was that I could pronounce every single ingredient. Every single organic ingredient I have actually had in my cupboard at one time or another. I bought all three of their Decadence bars: Organic Raw Cacao Chia, Organic Raw Coconut Almond + Organic Cayenne Cinnamon. Because I wanted to give a strong review (and mostly because I struggle with self control), I ate three within an hour. I can’t say it’s the first time I’ve done this and while it would have been more wise for me to have one at a time, I am happy to report that my indulgent binge didn’t leave me feeling like crap or that I overate. I actually felt great, satisfied with a sweet chocolate fix.
I personally like how the Decadence bars aren’t too sweet. I love dark chocolate and this gave me the taste I was craving. There isn’t any sugar or sugar alternatives that normally leave me on a hunt for more sweets or in a yo-yo salty v. sweet battle royale. The taste comes from the chocolate, nuts and spices and it’s pretty good. While I did love the taste, I was hoping for larger pieces of nut to give it a bit more texture. Since quinoa is so small, the texture is a bit one-dimensional, though not chalky or whipped like some of the other protein bars I’ve tried.
Aside from my wish that there was a stronger crunch, larger bits of nut + more texture, I am a fan. It’s not a Snickers Bar, this is true, but no one is claiming it is. Reading through the ingredients I can not only pronounce them all but I can actually envision them lining my cupboard shelves. I truly appreciate this fact and respect these little goodies a lot more than their counterparts in the nutrition bar aisle. If I have to recommend a convenient and indulgent treat to my clients, this is my first choice.
If you’re looking for a sweet without the partially hydrogenated oils + processed sugars, try Keen-Wah Decadence Bars. If you sign up on their site before the end of January, you’ll get one for free. A free chocolate bar? Why wait.
In the spirit of honesty, I will end with a small disclaimer: Essential Living Foods did ask me to review this product, BUT I purchased it with my own money and I don’t regret a cent of it.
