I am excited to share a guest post by fellow health writer, Amy Rose!
Alex Morgan is one of US soccer’s most decorated players. Since appearing in the senior national team back in 2010 Morgan has gone on to win an Olympic Gold Medal (2012) and World Cup (2015) with the US women’s national soccer team. Her success has led her to be labeled the face of women’s soccer. Morgan has talked about how her healthy diet and yoga workout regime have helped her achieve this success.
Ensuring that the body is correctly fueled is a huge part of an athlete’s preparation and soccer is considered one of the toughest sports on the body. Alex Morgan spoke to Health.com about her diet and told the site that she starts the day with a big breakfast. A usual breakfast for the star would consist of yogurt and two eggs. Starting the day off with a big breakfast is ideal if you are looking to stay in shape or eat clean. A high calorie intake at the beginning of the day provides fuel for your body to use throughout the day. Yogurt and eggs are high in protein, which is ideal for rebuilding muscle.
One useful tip Morgan told Health.com was that she eats a lot of bananas as they “really help with the state and recovery of muscles.” In a world full of protein supplements it is important to know that you don’t need to break the bank in order to help your body recover.
Yoga is an important part of Alex Morgan’s training regime and she has spoken about how she uses it to help her mentally prepare for soccer matches. She told the Huffington Post, “I really love to do yoga. Sometimes I forget about what I need and the calmness that I need at times. Yoga helps me calm down and think about where I am in my life.” While many athletes use yoga as an effective recovery after training and competition, the mental side of it is often overlooked. Yoga is a great way to find some time for yourself in order to meditate. As Morgan states, we live in a world that is constantly demanding our attention and it is great to be able to find a space to clam down. Such is the importance of yoga in her life that Morgan has even created her own 9-week yoga program.
Following the right diet and exercises is key to living a healthy and mindful life. Without her dedication to both her nutrition and yoga Morgan wouldn’t be in the position she is today as one of the top sports stars in America. When the US won the Women’s World Cup in 2015, soccer journalist Leanne Daddia writing for Betfair, a site renowned for covering the Premier League, wrote about how Morgan’s scoring ability was key in their run up to the final. And Morgan would be the first to document how she certainly couldn’t have played to such high levels if it wasn’t for yoga.
Hopefully this has inspired you to keep track of your diet and fitness regime and shown you that discipline in both areas can lead to success.
