Date shakes are an iconic symbol of Palm Springs and its surrounding desert and have been since the 1920’s. As I prepare for my upcoming Yoga Retreat in Palm Springs (and hear more about the building excitement for Coachella this month), I was inspired to create a heavenly shake that is sweet yet healthy, filled with the benefits of dates plus enough high-fiber green stuff and healthy fat to reduce the dreaded sugar crash (and subsequent sugar cravings that follow).
Date shakes are made tasty with (big surprise!) … dates, a great source of vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and zinc. Dates are an anti-inflammatory treat due to their high magnesium content, a mineral that can effectively reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and other inflammation-related diseases. The abundance of other nutrients found in these small treats have been shown to contribute to improved health from weight loss to constipation relief, reduced blood pressure, improved digestion, a healthy pregnancy, and impotence.
Unfortunately, dates are so small that you need to consume a large quantity to get all of the benefits. And worse still, when blended up along with ice cream, milk and sugar as in a traditional date shake, you’ll likely surpass the daily amount of sugar you’re supposed to have in a day.
Which is why I got creative with this afternoon blend: spinach and kale add key phytochemicals and nutrients, avocado, coconut and sunflower seeds add healthy essential fatty acids including MCT (medium-chain triglycerides). This is a high energy shake that has over 1,300 milligrams of potassium, 137% of your daily RDA for Vitamin A, and up to 11 grams of protein… something you might want to keep on hand for a trip to the dessert!
- 2 tablespoons date paste
- 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds (optional: soaked overnight for more nutrients and flavor)
- 1 tablespoon hempseeds
- 3 cups spinach
- 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
- ½ avocado
- ¼ teaspoon Himalayan sea salt
- 2.5 cups water
- Simple! Add all ingredients to the blender and mix on high for 3-5 minutes.
